No process is more enriching to a town than developing a body of good architecture. The fundamental basis of any town planning action must be to foster the constant improvement of the built environment as an expression of service to society. So much so that any such productivity bereft of quality leads the built asset to that most absurd of realities: the residual city.

The so called "Mediterranean arc" towns of the Castellón plain district are undergoing a development boom accompanied by a series of dislocation and false growth phenomena that are materialising in an increasingly intensive permanent colonisation of the landscape.

This continuous swallowing up of the natural environment and its replacement by buildings is multiplied by an architectural syndrome, a ferocious, clumsy postmodernism where the "theme park" archi-culture reaches irritating levels. This is the context (La Vall d'Uixó - year 2001 - paradigm of all this) in which the first phase of the sports complex designed by J. Sanjuan and J. Fresneda to resolve the main facilities of this type in the town has been completed.

Time has passed since 1998, when the hopeful town council defiantly opted for this design. These architects have amply demonstrated that they deserved the trust placed in them.

They inherited a very awkward urban reality. The Sports Space for which the project was designed is sited at a crossroads with many "fronts", some of which are the result of recent pitched battles: urban layouts based on historic 19th century communication routes; Franco-era workers colonies where the workers have come up in the world, industrial areas clumsily converted into "rehabilitated service uses" and new "architect-designed" networks under development which were supposed to foster the genesis of a new town.

The extremely difficult site and project were solved brilliantly by two key factors we have grown accustomed to finding in Fresneda and Sanjuan. These keys are precise and explicit but nonetheless very difficult to apply: sincerity of approach and architectural solutions and honesty of content and form.

The sports complex project was to be built in two separate stages: first the swimming pool and then the rehabilitation of the existing sports centre and its extension to fulfil a precise functional brief.

The first stage is now built and the swimming pool is open to the public. The building stands at the crossroads and presides over the new façade of the town in its own right, showing itself for what it is: correct, without stridency or extravagant posturing, in its wise silence, its magnificent regularity of rhythm, an abstract volume with a dynamic spatial expansion. Everything is subordinated to the rules of the game, those of discipline, to the rules of its siting under the light of the sun... perfectly oriented, perfectly filtered in a totally knowledge of the precise amount that must enter the hall in order to sparkle on the water and produce a graded luminosity that signifies and sectorises the intensity of each of the spaces within the space.

The dynamic interior is developed with a splendid control of section where the prefect transparency of the building from the access direction is combined with the dominant, desired view of the space of water from all parts of the building. The pool hall is visible from every point, from the cafeteria and from the stands, with a garden area at the end as an external visual escape.

Everything is dominated by an exceptional yet discreet control point which controls the circulation areas, the entrances, practically even the swimming. The administration is on the floor above and the changing rooms and installations on the floor below. This functional solution is impeccably fitted together with the use and arrangement of space.

The fact is that everything in this building is what it appears to be and nothing is deformed for the sake of appearance. Its skin and white concrete structural elements give formal shape to the interior and to most of the exterior.

The panot paving slabs rise up the walls, forming pedestals in the control areas and cafeteria, while discreet wood panelling gives the ceilings the same tone as the supporting structure of the stands and the skirting of the bathing area. The reality of the galvanised ironmongery is taken to its logical extreme in the internal furniture while the whole breathes an explicit linguistic will to keep all the elements of the composition level on the same line. Everything shows complete technical mastery. Fresneda and Sanjuan's architecture once again demonstrates the relevance of Le Corbusier's saying that "technique is the basis for lyricism"... and lyricism abounds in their work in La Vall d'Uixó.
